By clicking the button below, I agree with the. Kyma Ambiences [USO003] is the third sound effects bundle created by Matteo Milani.
The generation of these “Artificial Reality Ambiences” starts entirely in from the processing of white and pink noise by filtering – in the time/spectral domains – and convolving these sources with custom FM, additive, formant and granular synthesis. The composition’s resource of sound material is drawn solely from these processed stochastic sound elements: coloured noise is a raw material already full of life and can be sculpted into a variety of temporal forms, movements and textures.
The interaction with Kyma was typical of a composer who explored a device’s potential for sound transformation like a musical instrument. The goal was to obtain an organic and acoustic quality using only a restricted sound source, in order to evoke real spatial characteristics attached to each invented sound. The “Kyma Ambiences vol.1” sound effects collection is published @ 96kHz (native) – and is also available as dual-layer separated “Elements”, suitable for recombinant stratification, varispeed and spatial positioning in the surround field (for a total of 112 files @ 96kHz). Transmission apparatus is a construction kit designed to create a broad range of communication sounds, from real to “alien” broadcasting signals.
The library contains more than 2 GB of data, delivered in 373 files of unique sound material. It’s catalogued in five elements: AM (amplitude modulation), FM (frequency modulation), SSB (single side band – aka ham radio), KYMA (synthesised noises) and VOCAL (unintelligible speeches). The first three bands were recorded from the output of different radio receivers at 96 kHz via a (Harmonically Enhanced Digital Device) to add warmth and tube/analog sonic color to the recordings. All the samples have been carefully selected from these recording sessions, with the addition of just a little dsp processing to widen the stereo field. The Kyma folder also contains unique audio files entirely synthesised in the environment. A group of SFX called Vocal is the result of “destroyed” dialogues and vocal sources via spectral processing.
Transmission Apparatus is available in two versions. Crunch Mode is the result of a series of recording sessions made with a variety of vegetables, fresh bread, pizza crust and a selection of frozen goods. The library was originally created to document the differences in sound between a frozen and a non frozen vegetable. It's been interesting to notice how celery's round sound for example drops with temperature to be replaced with a high cracking texture.
After the first sessions I decided to introduce baked bread and pizza crust to bring something new to the collection, to then go back to frozen goods with a last recording session featuring frozen ice sheets. 158 squishy, gory, slimy and gooey sounds – made from Borax. Sound designers often rely on bigger sounding objects to support visuals. For example vegetables are heavily used for snaps and crunches for their natural sound and its rich texture. I've always wanted to find a good substitute for meat that could emulate its goriness, so I decided to record and document the “Borax Experiment”. I believe the result could be considered an overkill: the composite lasts for days, it can be torn apart and easily reassembled and, most of all, its sound can be controlled by simply adding water. Abandoned Shelters – The Danish Bunker Coast features mysterious and eerie sounds recorded in and around abandoned bunkers along the Danish West Coast.
The gathered ambiences form a comprehensive resource of steady winds, heavy gusts, rustling undergrowths as well as single waves and strong surfs that constantly stream and break through these inhospitable areas with concrete remains all around. A big part of the library was recorded inside the bunkers where the strong nature elements of wind and water are transformed into heavily comb filtered textures and dark atmospheres. Around Bridges introduces the inner sound of various bridges. The steel components of a bridge transmit the vibrations caused by passing cars or pedestrians in a fascinating manner.
So this library contains the sounds of excited beam barriers, noise barriers, expansion gaps and a lot more steel components that bridges are made of. Also included are takes of footsteps, rain and wind – ordinary noises that get a certain magic when recorded at a handrail. To round up this library several high quality AB-stereo ambiences of the acoustical surroundings of bridges are included.
