'Quite frankly, most of the calls we get are folks wanting coverage in their neighborhood,' said Richard Anderson, the city's chief administrator. 'This is one of the few responses we've had where we've got people who aren't interested.'


Anderson said the primary idea is to give public safety workers quick access to information. For example, firefighters en route to a blaze could look up the floor plan of the burning building. Police could quickly send surveillance tapes back to the station or to the media. Background checks could be made faster. Anderson said public Wi-Fi access is an added benefit, though it may not be readily available in all homes because the network is focused on providing access to workers on the road.
'If they didn't want [Wi-Fi], we certainly wouldn't force it down their throats,' he said of Wekiva Glen. 'We do want to make sure our officers and firefighters have all the information they can.'
With the system the city has used for the past 12 years, Anderson said, it could take a few minutes to send a photo. With the new one, he expects that to take seconds.
