Tell a Tale of Tarot: I’m always recommending tarot stories to people, so I thought I should have something on my tumblr about them! It’s a very simple process - you literally just have to pull some cards and write a line or two for each one that forms a coherent and cohesive narrative. Being able to do this in a regular reading – being able to relate the cards to each other and tell a story that makes sense to the querent – is a skill that I’m always working on, because I think that’s what a reading should be. I think that any time you give a reading, you’re essentially telling a story to the querent. Tarot stories are great practice for this (and as a bonus, if you’re a writer, they can help you beat Writer’s Block!) While tarot stories are fictional, you might be surprised at how accurate they can be as a reading technique (or maybe not, if you’re paying attention). Still, I prefer to not think of them as actual readings. I use tarot stories to help me get comfortable with cards, and to ease back into doing readings whenever I get out of a lapse. It’s much less pressure to have this thing that I do for fun, with no need for accuracy.

If you’re interested in trying this, there are a lot of good ways to go about it. Here are some of my favourites. - Beginning/Middle/End: A quick three card reading. This is almost never enough cards for me personally (as I often stick to a 2-4 line limit per card when I do this exercise), but I enjoy using it to set up the bones for a story. I may draw more cards to fill in the blanks. It’s also a good challenge to yourself for a writing exercise, as opposed to a strictly tarot approach. - Five Card Spread: Five cards is my magic number for a tarot story – it’s just enough cards for a full tale, but not so many that it's convoluted or overwhelming.

If I’m assigning positions to the cards, I really like Beginning - What Leads to the Middle - Middle - What Leads to the End - End (I call this the Five Card Storytelling Spread). Sometimes one card might represent a character more than a story timing, if I’m doing this without positions.

Sometimes there will be three cards about the beginning with two about what happens afterward. - You can also simply pull cards as you feel like it. One method is to go, “Once upon a time, there was a (card drawn), who (card draw), BUT (card draw), and then (card draw).” You can just keep going “and then” or “but then” until you reach the end of your story. Another method is to draw as many cards as you wish, and then arrange them until you’re happy with the resulting story. Which card will be your protagonist? Which card will be your ending? How do you make that happen with the cards that you have left?

With all of these methods, you can rearrange the cards at will. It’s more of a challenge to read them in the order they’re drawn, but it isn’t necessary. - You can actually use almost any spread to tell a story, if you’re creative enough or the positions are evocative enough. This might actually be a good way to test how you can relate a spread’s positions to each other! When actually writing the story, you can simply write a line or two for each card or story element.

You don’t have to know what the cards mean to do this! I almost solely use the card imagery – or what it makes me think of at the time – to do this. The Three of Swords may not represent a sad ending to your story if it’s the princess plunging the swords of her slain would-be rescuers into the heart of the dragon. This means that each deck can lend its own personal spin on the stories you tell. If you want to write more, you certainly can!

If you’re inspired, or a writer using this method to build a story, as I often am, then feel free to write pages for each card, if you like. As a method of practice for tarot reading, however, I recommend keeping it on the shorter side (I very rarely go above four lines). Here are some examples of how this could work, using the Tarot of Jane Austen. The Emperor - The Chariot - Three of Coins - The Empress - Four of Candlesticks In this order, we might see the story of an aging father, attempting to tame his wild daughter into a proper, dignified lady, so that she may be a suitable wife and be taken care of after his death. The Chariot - Three of Coins - Four of Candlesticks - The Empress - The Emperor Reorder the cards and you might see the successful courtship and marriage of a free spirited woman and her suitor. The two have a family and grow old together. Three of Coins - The Chariot - The Empress - The Emperor - Four of Wands What about this one?

I see a young woman meeting a guy, running off with him and getting pregnant. Her stern and powerful father then forces them into a shotgun wedding. Let’s try it this way. Who is the main character?The Chariot What do they want?The Emperor What is the path to getting it?Four of Candlesticks What will help them?

The Empress What will get in their way?Three of Coins So, let’s say our main character is Elyse. She wants power, and the easiest way for her to get it is to marry into it. “Trapping” a man with a baby seems cliche – maybe she can get in through his mother. The Three of Coins shows that a lack of connections may hinder her, however. So here’s a quick story, using one to two lines for each card: Elyse was the kind of girl who rode her horse ahead of the Chariot for the rush of it – it was thrilling in a way she couldn’t describe to have that much power.

That was why she had set her sights on marrying the Emperor’s son. The fact that she had no connections to the family didn’t worry her. Elyse was resourceful and determined. She paid a servant Three golden Coins, and he informed her that the Empress spent her afternoons at a secluded park.

Elyse dialed up her charm and then she “accidentally” ran into the Empress. It wasn’t long until she was completely smitten with Elyse. Download Dangdut Remix Bling there. Once Elyse was brought to the palace, the Emperor and his son quickly followed in their mother’s affections. All approved of the marriage when it was arranged, and after the wedding, Elyse was presented with Four Candlesticks – worth much more than her original three coins. ### Obviously, you’re not focusing on writing a masterpiece here – though some really beautiful work can come out of these stories.

But this isn’t about putting pressure on yourself to tell a good story or even to give a good reading. It’s about going from beginning to end. It isn’t necessary to include the card names in your story, but it helps to remember which cards came up for you. I’ve written many tarot stories without them, but I do like to make a note of the cards somewhere, just for future reference.. Again, there’s just a few lines per card, and this is a good example of where I didn’t use the card titles within the reading.

I believe I also didn’t use a spread – I drew some cards, arranged them so that I could see a story in them, and then wrote it down. These are all examples of using the cards’ imagery for your tales, but it’s also possible to relate a story back to the meanings you may associate with the cards already. I don’t have any examples pre-written that I’m comfortable sharing, but. If you decide to stick to using the imagery, this is a good way to put several different decks to use if you wouldn’t otherwise have a need for them (and it’s a GREAT excuse to by new ones, just saying).

This technique can be done with pretty much any deck (I’ve even seen it successfully done with unillustrated pips in the Minor Arcana!), but here are a few I’d particularly recommend: •: An important thing to mention is that you don’t have to use tarot cards to tell these stories. And the Storyworld cards are made for storytelling, so it’s a really good place to start if you want to try this! • and the are both decks that I’ve used as examples here, and for a good reason – they’re both decks based on stories, so the cards have a natural storytelling vibe to them. I will mention though, that if you buy the Tarot of Jane Austen, – that’s the only way to figure out who the characters in some of the cards are supposed to be. • has been great for telling stories – the cards are very character driven and it translates well into stories. • And of course I have to mention my beloved, which has been putting out some epic fantasy adventure stories for me these days.

• Last, but not least, was the first deck I started doing these with, and it really got me hooked on tarot and stories. But these are just some of my personal favourites – pick whatever deck you like that you think will work for you or give you the vibe you want for your tale.

And if you’re really into the tarot and writing pair, I’d like to recommend, which has several spreads to develop characters, plots, settings, and tons of cool prompt ideas. I really think Corrine Kenner did a great job with this one! Hopefully this has helped explain what I’m talking about when I bring up tarot stories – and remember, this is just a guideline to get you started. I didn’t invent this idea, these aren’t rules, and you can do whatever you want! Once things settle back down for me, I plan on offering some tarot stories to the public. Tarot Question: pregnancy:: I’m wondering how other readers approach questions about pregnancy. I discussed the possibility of such a reading once years ago for someone from the standpoint of, “Nothing in a reading can ‘guarantee’ you a pregnancy, but it could offer some suggestions as to how to get your emotional life in order and cultivate the kind of energetic vibration around you/in your life right now that would be most conducive to conceiving.” Or something to that effect. But that was a reeeeeally long time ago, and part of me feels like I’d hesitate to do a reading on pregnancy now. I personally lean away from reading cards deterministically, too, so I rarely give “predictions,” which some clients want (i.e., many want to know “What are the chances” of getting pregnant or “Will I?

BUT I also know, from my very first deck of cards at age 16, that some cards are traditionally associated with pregnancy. And that some readers do try to determine whether a pregnancy is “in the cards” for their client.

On the other hand – IMPORTANT POINT – I feel like questions about pregnancy are medical questions. And most tarot readers and intuitives I know refrain from offering “medical” advice or predictions to their clients.

So, all these things considered, I’m wondering how other readers see such questions. I see pregnancy and fertility as “medical,” from one standpoint, whereas, from another, I see pregnancy as a life experience that is very much linked to some individuals’ “spiritual” path (and an important part of relationships/love and life purpose for some, to boot) – all these latter being things I feel more comfortable reading about. I’m currently on the fence about whether to take pregnancy questions at all.

How do others treat pregnancy questions? Well, not sure that I’ll be adding anything useful to the conversation at this point but I’m bound and determined to reply anyway. Because one of the first in-person readings I ever gave happened to be a pregnancy question. I remember being a little dumbfounded.

I hadn’t ever considered “Will I have another kid?” to be anything that someone would ask a tarot reader. So, when she asked, “Will I have another kid?” I said, “Uh.do you want to?” She said yes.

I drew a card. I looked at it. I still remember it. Four of Pentacles. And I said: “If you have three kids now, then there’s a good chance you’ll get your fourth.” Except not nearly so clearly or succinctly or confidently.

Like I said, this was one of the first times I was reading for someone in front of me. A few months later I could see that she was pregnant, and I felt pretty good about the whole thing! Likewow, it’s that easy to predict pregnancy, yeah? Flash forward to now. My husband and I are working on starting a family. You’d think that I’d have an advantage in knowing when it’s going to happen, but that’s not how it’s turning out.

I read for myself on the matter because I’ll read for myself on anything. I don’t need a disclaimer with myself. But here’s what I’ve discoveredfor some people it’s complicated. And this is how it is with everyone on one subject or another.

For some people, getting a certain job is way more tied up in soul stuff than it is in finding a new relationship. Predicting the course of their career would require weekly readings of 10+ cards.

For other people, relationships of the heart are way more complicated (timeline/person/situation-wise) than job stuff. Telling them when their soulmate is going to come along is useless, because it’s so tangled in their personal development, other people, and the stars aligning. For myself, pregnancy is complicated. And that’s where a pregnancy question (or in reality,any question) gets tricky. I should’ve mentioned earlier that I read on medical, finance, legal, whatever - ALL with proper and extensive disclaimers - the only subject I refuse to read on is death (and that’s kind of ironic if you think about it).

It’s not the subject matter that’s inherently tricky unless you personally have a bone-to-pick with the subject matter. I believe it’s more a matter of how complicated the subject is for that client. Questions that are intricately tied up in a client’s soul-stuff, and are dependent on other people’s actions?

That’s tough. So to actually answer the question. People with simple soul-stuff around pregnancy? People with complicated soul-stuff around pregnancyehhhhhhh. That requires compassion, a delicate touch, and way more “how” and “what” rephrasings. *laughs off into the night*:: If you ever find yourself taking tarot too seriously, insisting that it must be done one way and only that way for accurate resultstry something different.

Try something silly. I just did a past/present/future reading (a format I hate, but it worked well for my experiment). I used the majors only, along with a title card. I asked someone from my past to pick a card between 0 and 22. I asked someone from my present to pick a card, and someone I think is going to be part of my future, or at least represents it. (I got 17, 21, 18) After shuffling my cards, I then pulled out the 17th, 21st, and 18th cards (I started counting from 0). And I ended up with a ridiculously accurate reading.

(There are tears in my eyes, it’s ridiculous) Even though it’s not how I read tarot, it worked. Which is one of the reasons why I believe so strongly that there are a lot of ways to do it. I’ve seen them in action. This seems like a good time to drag this out of the archives. I might just try this again!

Please note the copyright. Once you’ve decided which deck(s) you want to print, save the printable tarot cards to your computer. Avoid printing directly from the browser as you might end up with some weird and unwanted results (trust me on this).

Print out the tarot cards on your chosen paper. Make sure that you print them in the standard tarot deck size. If you’re not sure that the size is right, do a test print of one card so you don’t destroy the entire paper. If you printed the images on regular paper and want a good backing, then you need to use spray adhesive to glue the paper to the actual cards. Carefully trim the edges of the cards - some people like rounded edges, so make sure you have enough place for the borders. Once the cards are printed, let them dry and then seal them with a varnish spray. After that, run them through a laminator.

These days are, and if you find yourself creating lots of tarot decks, you might want to invest in one. You can also take the files to office supply stores (such as Office Depot in the USA) for printing and laminating.
