NEW ORLEANS – There hasn't been much for fans to cheer about since left nearly four years ago. And when the Cavaliers finally did have a shining moment Sunday night, it was James who actually told to hold his NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award trophy up high to allow himself and Cleveland to bask in the glow of it all. 'I just wanted him to have his moment and the moment is holding the trophy above your head,' James said. 'There are few moments in our year where you do that. Winning a championship.

It's winning the MVP. The other championship is winning the MVP of the All-Star Game. And he seemed like he didn't exactly know what to do, and I just wanted to try to give him a tip.' Irving earned MVP honors after scoring an East-high 31 points and dishing a game-high 14 assists on Sunday night.

The second-time All-Star joined James, who won it in 2006 and 2008, as the only Cavaliers to win the award. Irving also had 15 points and four assists in the fourth quarter to spark the East's come-from-behind victory. 'There were so many different MVPs out there on the floor, and to be named MVP amongst those great stars is truly an honor,' Irving said. 'It's a blessing and I'm glad to bring it back to Cleveland.'

Mvp All Star Game 2012 Basketball Olympic Team. NBA draft as the number one pick. Off the court, Duncan is known for his quiet and unassuming ways. Watch video Who's the NBA's MVP so far. 1.5 APG) has made Boston the snap-take winner of the much-discussed draft pick trade that landed No. His first All-Star Game.

While it's now Irving's show, James was definitely the heart and soul of the Cavaliers from 2003-10. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft is an Akron, Ohio native who led the Cavaliers to a 2007 Eastern Conference Finals championship and won two NBA MVP awards. But after James opted to sign with Miami in free agency in 2010, Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert said via e-mail to the fans that James would never win a title. The Cavs fans burned James' jersey, cursed him and threw stones at his Nike billboard.

James got the last laugh, winning two titles and playing in the NBA Finals three times since going to the Heat. Cleveland has not been to the playoffs since James has departed.

The Cavaliers have been so bad that they have drafted first overall twice with Irving in 2011 and Anthony Bennett last year. An experiment with center Andrew Bynum this season was a nightmare as he was cut and recently signed with the East-leading Indiana Pacers. Mike Brown is in his second stint after Byron Scott was fired after last season and general manager Chris Grant was fired earlier this month. The Cavaliers went into the All-Star break with the Eastern Conference's fifth-worst record at 20-33 despite winning their last four. 'I don't think they needed Kyrie Irving to win this award to have a good vibe,' James said.

'I think they know they have someone very special. He's very special.' Irving has been the only reason for the Cavaliers to smile as he won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2012 and was voted in as a 2014 Eastern Conference starting guard by the fans. His award doesn't change the. But for the moment, it did present the post-James Cavaliers in a positive light.

'I try not to get too high or low,' Irving said. 'It's a great accomplishment, especially bringing [it] back to Cleveland. That's the most important thing.' Wrote Brown via text message: 'Winning the All-Star MVP is great for Kyrie, his family, the Cavs organization, the City of Cleveland and all that live in Northeast Ohio. For him to put on a winning performance like he did [Sunday night] is a testament to the hard work he has put into improving his game this summer and current season. He is only scratching the surface of his true potential.'

The All-Star Game came down the stretch with four MVP candidates in Irving, East forward Carmelo Anthony and West forwards Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant. Griffin and Durant both scored 38 points and were four points shy of tying Wilt Chamberlain's scoring record of 42 points in 1962. Anthony had 30 points and nailed an All-Star Game record eight 3-pointers. Irving actually passed the ball to Anthony for a missed 3-pointer with 6.9 seconds left. Had Anthony nailed that trey, the New York Knick might've been the MVP instead.

Had the West won, either Griffin or Durant would have likely got the nod. Irving received eight of a possible 13 MVP votes, Durant and Anthony both received two and James got one. 'I was hoping [Anthony] made it so I could just get another assist,' Irving said. 'That was the only thing I was hoping for. Whether he got it or not, it was just a happy moment just to be out there with all those great stars.

But I was hoping he would make it so I could get that 15th assist.' More on NBA All-Star Game. New York Post The Patriots have entered full-on damage-control mode. One day after ESPN reported the team has reached a breaking point amid strife among owner Robert Kraft, coach Bill Belichick and star quarterback Tom Brady, Kraft told The MMBQ the story is wrong, calling major parts of the report “a total fabrication and fiction” and saying Belichick “absolutely” will coach the team next season.

The ESPN report details the behind-the-scenes power struggle between Brady and Belichick over the two-time MVP’s personal trainer and long-term future in the league. The most shocking details allege Kraft forced Belichick to trade prized backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to reassure Brady his job was not in peril. The Draft Wire The Cleveland Browns have two top-five picks in the 2018 NFL draft, and a million different directions they could go with either selection. Do they address their needs at every level of the defense, or opt to keep reloading their offense with young talent?

In the latest 2018 NFL mock draft from Bleacher Report, the Browns take the latter approach, opting for the dynamic duo of USC quarterback Sam Darnold and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. There’s no denying Darnold and Barkley are worthy of top-five consideration, but the Browns would be giving up on 2017 second-round pick DeShone Kizer at quarterback, while adding Barkley to a backfield that already posts a pair of underrated players •. Raiders Wire Warriors coach Steve Kerr makes peanuts compared to the money the Raiders are throwing at Jon Gruden to be their next head coach. And Kerr offered a witty reply when asked his thoughts on Gruden’s reported 10-year, $100 million contract Friday on “The Damon Bruce Show” on 95.7 The Game. “I’m actually thrilled (about it) because [Warriors general manager] Bob Myers and I had a conversation this morning and I said, ‘You know, Bob, Gruden’s got one [Super Bowl] title, and I’ve got two [NBA championships],’... And a hundred mil over 10 years? I don’t know.

Maybe we need to talk, Bob,” Kerr joked. Kerr is in the fourth year of a five-year, $25 million contract with Golden State, while Gruden hasn’t •. Lonzowire.usatoday.com LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball came to Lithuania mainly to play basketball, but also to star in a new chapter in LaVar Ball’s saga as depicted in “Ball in the Family.” But the Facebook Watch show—and its expansive production crew, in particular—may be getting in the way of the boys’ actual basketball reality with Prienu Vytautas. According to Lithuanian sports journalist Paulius Cubera, some of their own teammates, including guard Tomas Dimsa, aren’t fans of all the extra equipment that’s been hanging around Prienai Arena. Nor have BC Vytautas’ opponents taken a warm tack toward that attention. According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, Gelo and Melo didn’t join the team for its trip to Vilnius to play BC Lietuvos •.

AFP US Figure Skating champion Bradie Tennell, Mirai Nagasu and Karen Chen are headed to the Pyeongchang Olympics selectors said Saturday as world silver medallist Ashley Wagner failed to make the team. USA Figure Skating's selection committee announced the three women that would compete at next month's Winter Games on Saturday morning in the wake of their one-two-three finish at the national championships in San Jose, California, on Friday night. Tennell, 19, has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season and earned her first Olympic berth with a near-flawless free skate on Friday. Golfweek.com Dustin Johnson seriously is a maniac. The World No.

1 is in contention at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the opening PGA Tour event after the calendar turned to 2018. Shots like the one below have certainly helped that cause. Johnson took extreme dead aim Saturday at the 382-yard par-4 sixth at the Plantation Course at Kapalua. The hole plays quite downhill, which meant it was drivable for the long-hitter. But he did more than just get to the green on the drive Johnson nearly jarred the tee shot for a par-4 ace! Johnson would’ve had to get a bit lucky if the ball had hit the hole, as there was a lot of speed as the shot was tracking toward the cup.

Regardless, he missed the hole by less •. NBC Sports: ProFootballTalk A 10-year, $100 million contract averages $10 million per year. Obviously, however, it doesn’t mean the employee will get $10 million every year.

As noted Friday, both here and in the PFT PM podcast, a decade-long deal provides plenty of space for creativity when it comes to crafting a perception that a coach is getting paid more than he is. And as it relates to the contract given by the Raiders to former and future coach Jon Gruden, the deal is backloaded, with less than $10 million per year being paid in the early years. How much less? One league source said that my round-number example of $25 million over the first five years and $75 million over the final five years from PFT PM isn’t that •.

New York Post Jeff Triplette is ejecting himself. The longtime NFL official has decided to retire, multiple reports stated, a day after being on the crew for the Titans’ 22-21 win over the Chiefs, which featured a few disputed calls that had Chiefs fans furious. Triplette, who first became an NFL field judge in 1996 and was promoted to referee in 1999, has been one of the more recognizable names in officiating and part of several high-profile incidents, including throwing a penalty flag that temporarily blinded Browns offensive lineman Orlando Brown in ’99.

His last act as NFL official will be in Kansas City, where, among other issues fans have had with how the game was called, he blew the whistle early on •. Warriors Wire The Warriors blew the doors off the Clippers in the second half on Saturday. They had another explosive third quarter, outscoring L.A., 39-21 ensuring the starters wouldn’t have to play in the fourth. Two points came on a rare, over-the-rim alley-oop from Draymond Green to JaVale McGee: Green, who logged his 21st triple-double Thursday in Houston, through three quarters Saturday had nine points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Stephen Curry led the way, exploding for 45 points in three quarters, hitting eight 3-pointers while going 15-of-16 from the free-throw line. McGee has largely fallen out of the rotation with the emergence of rookie Jordan Bell and the steady play recently from Kevon Looney. CBS Sports Nikola Mirotic is playing the best basketball of his career for the Bulls right now.

He's shooting 46 percent from 3-point range, averaging a career high 18.4 points per game. The Bulls are also 11-5 since his return from injury. All of this has not changed the fact that he wants a trade.

A fallout with the team in relation to a fight between Mirotic and Bulls teammate Bobby Portis led to Mirotic's trade demand. Chicago is unable to move Mirotic, however, until Jan.

15 due to a new contract he signed over the summer that took until close to training camp to be agreed upon. He also has a no-trade clause for the first year, which is going to make the Bulls' efforts in trading him a little difficult. CBS Sports ATLANTA -- Former UCF coach Scott Frost said Saturday that his team was 'insulted' by its final No.

12 ranking from the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. In what was at times a blistering attack on the system that left UCF out of the playoff, Nebraska's new coach said there was a 'concerted effort' to keep the Knights out of the top four. Scott made these comments in Atlanta after accepting the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, presented by the Football Writers Association of America on Saturday. UCF finished as the only undefeated team in the FBS at 13-0. 'I didn't want to talk about it during the season,' Frost said. 'But I understand the argument of whether or not UCF should •. MMAWeekly UFC president Dana White wants featherweight champion Cris Cyborg to fight bantamweight titleholder Amanda Nunes next.

Nunes wants to fight Cyborg. Cyborg wants a true 145-pound contender. Though Cyborg had called for former Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson for her next fight, it appears that Anderson still isn’t prepared to return to the cage. Nunes has been lobbying for a bout with Cyborg for quite some time, so White quickly zeroed in on it, saying, “Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg. That is the fight to make and that is the fight I will make.” Soon after White declared that he would book Cyborg vs. Nunes, his featherweight champion put out a defiant statement, saying that •.

CBS Sports Referee Jeff Triplette's reputation precedes him. It's why plenty of people -- us included -- were surprised that he had earned the right to work the Titans-Chiefs Wild-Card matchup.

What was much less surprising is that Triplette would be in the middle of several controversial calls in a game that ended with Tennessee eking out a 22-21 win. Two of those calls came in the first half, starting with this sack on Marcus Mariota. He clearly fumbled the ball and the Chiefs recovered. End of story, right?

Triplette ruled that Mariota's forward progress had been stopped. The Titans kept the ball and kicked a field goal to cut the Chiefs' lead to 14-3. Needless to say, folks weren't impressed •.

Field Gulls The Green Bay Packers ended their GM search on Sunday, promoting director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst to replace Ted Thompson. Gutekunst, 44, has spent the last six years with the Packers and so he’s familiar with how Green Bay has been doing things. Is that smart?

The Packers’ entire organization and identity is built around Aaron Rodgers. That’s not just because Rodgers is great but because the rest of the roster is anything but— Green Bay missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008, going 4-1 in his first five starts and then 3-8 after he broke his collarbone. Those three wins were: +5 against the 5-11 Bears +6 (OT) against the 5-11 Bucs +6 (OT) against the 0-16 Browns They ranked •. New England Sports Network They say distance only makes the heart grow fonder. Need evidence? Look no further than how some New England Patriots supporters long for former backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. They just can’t let go of the guy, and this narrative also isn’t going away any time soon.

Whenever Garoppolo, who was traded to the San Francisco 49ers before the NFL trade deadline, makes an impressive throw or wins a game throughout the course of his career, those same people will be screaming, “HOW DID THE PATRIOTS LET THIS GUY GO?!” It’s fine to wonder why New England didn’t get more in return for Garoppolo. A second-round draft pick seemed paltry at the time and might only look worse as Garoppolo’s career continues. Pinstripe Alley For as long as I can remember, the Yankees bullpen has been considered a strength. The team always seems to feature a dominant closer, with a more than ample supporting cast. Sparky Lyle became the first AL reliever (second overall) to win the Cy Young Award in 1977. The club brought in future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage the following year to form an unprecedented two-headed bullpen monster.

More recently, Mariano Rivera enjoyed a nearly two decades-long run as the Greatest Of All Time. Mo had a constantly changing — yet usually highly effective — stable of set-up men. Fans enjoyed the thrilling combination of “No Runs DMC” for a half-season in 2016, before Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman were •.

MMAmania.com Daniel Cormier says it’s going to take more than a powerful punch to take out Khabib Nurmagomedov, and now Joe Rogan is one-upping “DC,” saying that if you don’t somehow find a way to defeat “The Eagle” in the first 90 seconds, defeating him in any manner is likely not going to happen. Download Script Macro X7 Auger. And you have to look no further than Khabib’s dominant performance over Edson Barboza at UFC 219 as a prime example (video replay here). “He’s just on such another level that the odds of beating him drop significantly after the first minute-and-a-half,” Rogan said on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast via MMA Junkie. “You saw the look on Barboza’s face: Two minutes in and he’s trying to get up.

You saw the look on.

• A lthough the NBA season is barely a few weeks old, the Association has already seen some outstanding performances from some of the league’s biggest stars like the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant scoring 39 points, potential free agent to be Dwight Howard grabbing 24 rebounds in consecutive games, to the Celtics’ Rajon Rondo notching a triple-double on New Years day. In our, the MVP award went to Chicago’s Derrick Rose, followed closely by Dirk Nowitzki, Dwight Howard, and Lebron James. Check out who makes our initial NBA MVP Rankings for January 2012. • Dallas Mavericks 20.1 ppg, 5.6 reb, 2.6 ast, 1 stl,.460 FG%,.891 FT% Although the defending NBA champion Mavericks have gotten off to a slow start with all of the new faces on the roster, Dirk still leads the team in scoring at 20+ppg. He’s struggled early on with his 3 point shooting(.220 3PT%), but has scored 18 or more points in 7 of 8 contests. Surely after things begin to gel with front-court mate Lamar Odom and new SG Vince Carter, his stats will be at or around their normal 24 ppg and 7 boards.

But if the Mavericks intend of ever getting back on track, Jason Kidd and Co had better keep feeding the rock to Dirk. • San Antonio Spurs 16 ppg, 5.7 ast, 2.4 reb,.487 FG% While many of the so-called experts continually write off the aging Spurs, the triumvirate of Parker, Duncan, and Ginobili continue to win games in spite of yet another injury to Manu. Tony Parker now becomes the de-facto lead dog, helping the Spurs surge into 1st place in the Southwest Conference, and only a half game behind OKC and Denver for the #1 seed out West. TP has been as consistent as ever, scoring in double figures in every game and dishing out 7 assists in 6 of 8 contests. Although his 3 point shooting has yet to come around, he remains one of the quickest players with the ball in his hands, even as he nears 30 years of age. • Boston Celtics 14.8 ppg, 10.5 ast, 5.1 reb, 1.8 stl,.523 FG%,.429 3PT% Judging by statistics alone, some already consider Rondo the best all around point guard in the game today. We all knew about his outstanding lock-down defense and lightning quick handles, but Rajon has shown an improved offensive arsenal, scoring 31 and 22 points when Celtics leading scorer Paul Pierce missed the team’s first two games.

Right now he’s averaging career highs in scoring, rebounds, FG%, and three point shooting, while once again ranking among the Top 3 assist men in the game today, helping to keep Boston above water until the Big 3 is once again healthy. Is there any doubt that Rondo is now the Celtics best player? • Portland Trailblazers 21.9 ppg, 7.7 reb, 1.9 ast, 1 stl,.492 FG% With the Brandoy Roy era officially over in Portland, the team looks more and more to burgeoning superstar Aldridge. He’s already one of the best power forwards in basketball with range extending to the 3 point arc. LaMarcus has scored in double figures in every game this season, including 20 or more in 4 contests, highlighted by a 30 point effort against Kevin Durant and OKC.

Aldridge is playing major(37+) minutes en route to leading the Trailblazers to the top of the Northwest Division standings. If he keeps playing like this, he should be in the running for his 1st All Star appearance in Orlando. • LA Clippers 24.7 ppg, 10.3 reb, 2.3 ast, 1.2 stl,.563 FG% For the first time in a long time, a Los Angeles team other than the Lakers are in 1st place in the Pacific Division, mainly behind the play of 3rd year Clippers forward Griffin and his new PG Chris Paul. Griffin has been scoring like a demon this season, hitting the 20 point mark in every contest, including a 34 point, 13 board effort against the Bulls on December 30th. Blake’s FG% is at a career high as he has cut down on turnovers, but continues to be a bull in the painted area, dunking on opponent with a ferocity we haven’t seen since Dominique Wilkins. Even though he and Paul don’t really care for their new “Lob City” moniker, it fits them to a tee. • NY Knicks 29.1 ppg, 6.9 reb, 3.9 ast, 1.1 stl,.463 FG%..378 3PT% Behind Melo scoring at a career high clip, the Knicks are slowing churning towards the.500 mark.

Whether it has been a go ahead 3 pointer in the final seconds to beat Washington or the four 30+ point scoring nights on the season, Carmelo has been everything the Knicks have wanted and needed since Patrick Ewing left town nearly 12 seasons ago. While he may not have the ferociousness of Lebron or the sweet stroke of Durant, Melo remains the NBA’s most potent offensive player.

It’s only a matter of time before Anthony, Stoudemire, and Chandler collectively help will the Knicks to the upper half of the Eastern Conference. Look for his numbers to skyrocket once Baron Davis returns from injury. • Chicago Bulls 20.9 ppg, 8.9 ast, 3.6 reb, 1 stl,.439 FG%,.316 3PT%,.887 FT% Last year’s reigning NBA MVP is once again playing at a high level and has the Bulls sitting with the best record in the league. Even though his scoring is down slightly with the arrival of 3 time All Star Rip Hamilton at SG, Rose is among the league’s leaders in double-double with 3, and notched 8 or more assists in 6 of 8 contests. Rose even seemed to take it personal in his match-up with all worldly PG Chris Paul, having his best game of the season consisting of 29 points and 16 assists.

With continued potency in his perimeter shooting along with remaining healthy, Rose stands a good chance of bing in the running all season for consecutive MVP Awards. • LA Lakers 27.8 ppg, 6.2 reb, 5.8 ast, 1 stl,.438 FG% It’s amazing to think that the 13 time All Star, 5 time NBA Champion, and 9 time All NBA performer has one only one MVP Award on his resume. But with the noticeably more vulnerable Lakers relying even more heavily on Kobe this season, 2012 may be the year that the “Black Mamba” earns his second Bill Russell trophy. Even with taking nightly injections into a severely damaged wrist, Bryant has managed to tally 26 or more points in 7 of 9 games and ranks 3rd behind only Lebron and Durant in the scoring race.

While his 3 point shooting(.200 3PT%) appears to be suffering the most from the injury, Kobe’s rebounding and assist numbers are at their highest in 5 years. Even at age 33, we should know not to write off the “Mamba” just yet. • Orlando Magic 20.3 ppg, 15.9 reb, 2.6 blk, 2.1 ast, 1.6 stl,.593 FG% Even with the trade winds constantly swirling around the NBA’s best big man, Howard has continued to play at an insanely high level. For him, notching consecutive nights with 24 rebound in a game is just another day at the office, but averaging nearly 25 ppg in January is not, as he continues to dominate opposing centers like no other player in the league. As the 2 time reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Howard once again leads the NBA in rebounding, and ranks 2nd in blocks, and in the Top 10 in scoring and FG%.

Whoever winds up with Howard, whether it’s NJ, LA, Chicago, or Dallas, they will be getting an all around good guy in addition to an outstanding basketball player. Enjoy him while you can Orlando. • OKC Thunder 26.1 ppg, 6.1 reb, 3.3 ast, 1.1 blk, 1 stl,.503 FG%,.417 3PT% The NBA’s reigning 2 time scoring champ not only has his sites set on another scoring crown but an NBA title for his up-and-coming Thunder squad. Behind an outstanding supporting cast led by Russell Westbrook and James Harden, Durant and Co. Have gotten out to a fast start, as the #1 seed out West. Durant has notched 20 or more points in 6 of 8 contests, including 30 or more in 4 straight games. He has proven again to be one of the game’s best perimeter shooters, nailing 2 or more treys in 6 games so far this season.

Can Durant and the Thunder hold off the Spurs and Mavs out West? • Miami Heat 29.9 ppg, 7.7 reb, 7.4 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk,.595 FG% After a lackluster Finals appearance and a bullseye clearly on his back as a villain, Lebron has taken it all in stride and has resumed his assault on the NBA record books in his 2nd season in Miami. Even with the roster constantly changing around he, Wade, and Bosh, James is once again leading the Association in scoring, including scoring 26 or more in all but one game this season. Lebron is the game’s best stat stuffer, and is the NBA’s odds on favorite to finish leading the league in triple-doubles. More importantly, his tremendous production has helped the Heat out to an impressive 7-1 start, tied with Chicago for the best record in the East. Look for Lebron to be in the Top 3 for the MVP Award all season. January 9, 2012 – Check out our initial NBA MVP Rankings of the 2011-12 season.
