The PrimeFilm 7200 scanner from Pacific Image provides scanning of 35mm negativefilm strips and transparencies at 7200 x 7200dpi resolution. The Pacific Image Electronics PrimeFilm 3650u ($349. Robert Miles 23am Rarity. Free Download Screenshot For Blackberry Curve on this page. 99 direct) is a low-end slide scanner in most ways, limited to one slide or frame of film at a time. But it also offers 3,600-pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical resolution and high-powered image correction in the form of Digital ICE for removing scratches and dust, restoring faded color, and removing graininess.

It promises, but only marginally delivers, high-quality scans for low-volume scanning. The scanner comes with a photo editor ( Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0), an album program ( Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0), and a Twain driver that offers a wealth of features. The Variations option, for example, lets you modify the image, based on a preview scan, by picking from variations in color, brightness, and the like as alternatives that show on screen. Setting up a scan is tedious enough that you won't want to scan a lot of images at once. To scan from a strip of film, you have to position the film manually just so, then snap the lid down to hold it in place. Slides are easier, since they just slip into position before you snap the lid down.

In either case, however, you have to repeat the process for each image. On our tests, prescans took 10 seconds to 1 minute 48 seconds, depending on whether the scanner needed to calibrate or otherwise prepare for the scan. Scan times were 32 to 62 seconds at the default 1,800 ppi-appropriate for printing 8-by-10 prints. With Digital ICE, the time jumped to 2:37 to 2:49. Scan quality is good overall. Zooming in, however, shows less detail than you get with some other scanners at lower resolution. Even some flatbeds, including the Canon CanoScan 9950F, do a better job.

On one slide that was particularly hard to scan, with a dark tree line against a bright sky, the 3650u did a moderately good job of retaining detail based on shading in both the sky and the tree line. But again, we've seen better, including scans from the Canon CanoScan 9950F and from the Plustek OpticFilm 7200 film scanner, which offers 7,200 ppi and costs far less. If it weren't for its digital image correction, the 3650u would be out of the running.

As it is, we give the Plustek 7200 an edge for low-end film scanning, even though some will prefer the 3650u, since Digital ICE means not having to worry about dust on your slides. Subratings: Slides: Strips: More scanner reviews: • • • • • • •.
