You will need to create a folder for your Windows 3x 'C:' drive. Make a sub-folder to hold the Windows install files. Copy all of the files from the original 3.5' floppies into that sub-folder to install Windows 3x from. Some generic instructions (under Windows) to install Windows 3x in DOSBox: Installing Windows Before starting, here are a few warnings to heed: • DON'T mount your actual c: drive -Mounting your actual c: drive root as c in DOSBox (never do 'mount c C: ' - it's okay to 'mount c C: doswin') as this places your regular Windows at risk when you try to install Windows 3.x. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
• Windows 3x support is only in DOSBox version 0.65 and higher. • Create a folder on your computer to mount as your 'C:' drive. • Create a sub-folder in this folder to hold install files, name it say, INSTALL.
• Copy all the files on your Windows 3x install floppies into this install folder. • Start DOSBox. • At the prompt, type: • mount c c: dosboxc [Enter] • c: [Enter] • cd install [Enter] (or whatever you named it) • setup.exe [Enter] Just follow the Windows installation instructions through Just exit DOSBox at this point as you will have no mouse in Windows 3x until you restart DOSBox. Notes Installing Windows 3x to a disk image: It is also possible to mount an image, boot from it, install DOS and then Windows. See on boot images on. After you have created your disk image, you can use to copy install folders into the image, boot from the image (see the guide again) and begin installing. Both XMS and EMS must be set to false in your DOSBox.conf.
For most uses a boot image is not practical. Another problem is that you can only use mounted images not mounted real folders or drives (floppy, CD-ROM). However, some games might only install from a boot image. A boot image might sometimes be the only way. Some things that don't work correctly with Windows 3x in DOSBox: • The 'A:' drive, it won't show in Windows File Manager nor in the 'run' dialog if you mount an 'A:'.
You can however, enter the path i.e. Shot By Shot Katz Ebook Readers more. : 'a: setup.exe'. It will show when nothing is mounted as 'A:'. • 32-bit file and disk access doesn't work in DOSBox.
Ever since, all kinds of crazy things have been getting released like the fabled GV Mobile+ [] and other apps that have been stuck in approval purgatory for months (or even years). Some emulators slipped through the cracks either by appeasing Apple's wishes such as Commodore 64 [] and others that were inexplicably approved, then immediately pulled like. Late last night iDOS [] was released. Based on, an open source DOS emulator, iDOS is a universal app that has PC keyboard support, mouse support, multiple screen modes, and more. Forum member Menneisyys posted the following two screenshots of iDOS running Spellcasting 101 both on his iPad and on his 4th generation iPod touch (Yes, it even runs at Retina Display resolution.): iPad left, iPod touch right.
Click for full size. Currently we've got on our forums with people trying various games running in the emulator and there's on the with even more compatibility testing going on. We're going to have our own retro fetishist Blake Patterson take a closer look at iDOS very soon, so if you've got any questions or want to see any specific games tested that aren't mentioned in the threads I linked, drop a comment and we'll try to include it in our followup post. In the meantime, if you're even remotely interested in emulating old DOS games, this is 99¢ you need to spend. While iDOS technically seems to comply with all the new approval guidelines, it's hard to say whether or not this was an accidental approval or if iDOS truly does have the blessing of Apple. In any case, I'd download it now in the interest of being safe rather than sorry if the powers that be change their mind. UPDATE: Just for an idea of exactly how deep the iDOS rabbit hole goes, and what the emulator is actually capable of: After blasting this link out to everyone I know, my friend Sam successfully installed Windows 3.0 and is currently playing Windows Solitaire on his iPad: This is unreal.
The capabilities of this emulator is insane. Update 2: Mark just posted the following video in our comments of him running Space Quest: Update 3: It seems that Sierra adventure games work great in the emulator, here's a screenshot of Freddy Pharkas - Frontier Pharmacist sent to us by Fish of. Update 4: Assuming your monocle hasn't blown completely off your face yet, forum member Audioteknika just got Warcraft II running: Update 5: Aaaaannnd just like that it's gone. Update 6: Even though it may seem like the fun is over, if you're a jailbreaker you can download this same emulator for free. It's called DOSPAD and.
Also, just for fun, one last screenshot of The 7th Guest running from a CDROM disc image, complete with music. Many old DOS games have indeed been released to the public domain! Beneath a Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queen.
But the question would be if 'abandonware' would be the appropiate term here. Also there are a few games that cannot even be bought anymore, because they have really been ABANDONNED.
Here abandonware is a good word for it, since you cannot buy them even if you really really wanted to. I would not consider it piracy to run these games, since the owners don´t care anymore for their product. Other games (for example all Lucas Arts games ever made) are still copyrighted and sold, and therefore are not abandonware. Whether you consider it OK is irrelevant.
The copyright laws still apply unless the owner of the copyright specifically waives their rights, like game released into the public domain. Whether you can still buy the games or not is also irrelevant as SOMEONE still owns the distribution rights and if that person is not you, then you do not have the right to distribute that game regardless of how old it is and you do not have the right to run it without the copyright holders consent if you find it at an abandonware site. As I said, the law does not recognize 'abandonware' it only recognizes that copyrights still exist on those old games. Update: Heretic installed and fully running. Installing sam and max now. Also a word of advice for those of you with idos installed, you really should change the doscfg file to include the use of your device's physical memory.
And change the CPU core to normal rather than simple. This is my updated dospad.cfg: [dosbox] memsize=8 [cpu] core=normal cycles=3000 cycleup=500 cycledown=20 [render] frameskip=2 aspect=normal scaler=none it should speed up some of those dos applications that recommend/need 2-4 mb of ram or so. If you are using an ipad or current iphone 4, it is ok to set the memsize to 16 or so. For those of you who have zero clue how to use the features of the Appstore release of iDOS or the Jailbreak/Cydia version DOSPod or manually load files to it.
You should google DOSBOX. You will find all the information you need, including list of all the commands, and files you can modify, etc. As for the location where to manually place your dos files to install, etc. It is: private/var/mobile/Documents The actual 'Documents' folder is your 'main C: Drive' and you can place your install/setup files in here and run them and install them to whatever folder they need to go in, etc. Appharantly even some without a jailbroken device managed to make iDOS mount their iDevice's root directory.
Basically allowing the program to access all the behind the scenes files as those of us with Jailbroken devices are so familar with (SSH, etc). I am wondering if those 'most vicious' dos or windows 3x viruses. You know the kind in which every early computer geek faced one time or another in history, where the Virus doesn't care who or what the file is. But just deletes everything in it's path (regardless of what type of file, type of format, type of OS compatibility, etc):D!
Or maybe some of the ol' boot sector corruptin' viruses or those that keep self replicating:D! Ahhh yes, Raptor runs so smooth! One of the best smoothest dos games on my iPhone, a little choppy, but playable to the fullest. Terminal Velocity runs smooth also, however seems delayed/laggy to react fast enough to enemies. Then for all you GUITAR HERO AND ROCKBAND FANS!!!! HERES THE REAL OG ROCKSTAR GUITARIST SIMULATOR!!!!!11 Also I installed windows and installed an old program called BadApp16, which is program to make windows crash, actually suspose to be for later editions of windows, however it works jsut the same as windows 3x crashes, However I am not sure if it crashed because of the app or because it just did not know how to run the app since it's 16bit, etc, BUT WHATEVER THE CASE I PRESENT THE RETURN OF THE BSOD!!!! Except it's not blue on my device.
Rather the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH! However it manages to freeze the DOS App. When it crashed to the BSOD, i was stuck staring at it and could only press the option, kboard, and kpad buttons, but when i clicked keyboard, it froze the app completely.
My last task before deleting idos and dospad from my iphone was the great Scorched Earth! However, I am bored now of this iDos/DosPad stuff. It's a nice demo to showcase the iOS's ability to run dos and windows 3x and 95, but other than that, it's just too unstable and 'too slow' to really be practical. Maybe later someone will release a version with better performance and stability or just make modifications to the actual dos games to be more compatible with the iDos program. But until then, I just deleted it.
